Reprieve

I am distracted by her clavicle

For a moment, then my stare is tempted

Downward. The hollow of her neck, such bliss!

From across the room her smile glides to me;

Caught in my crime, the damsel- opens her door?

Oh, disaster! A cross hangs loosely on her chest!

It is unfair to chase a pretty girl, it’s true,

(Though once my teeth are in them, they become

A withered bane of men, a ravenous

Snake eating lovers as they sleep by a river),

And I do not want someone I already hate.

I have enough advantages over women

That it is a dreadfully evil thing

To pursue simple-minded girls.
