Carmen 17

At your tremulous wake your friends suddenly

Recall the events of your sordid life.

I smile as God did when he gave Lucifer breath

And absent-mindedly trace the half moon

Your red mouth once carved into my shoulder.

Long ago I kissed you into ashes

But it took some time for the world to see-

The body defiled by soft lips of flame,

Innocence stolen from spring's bright meadows,

The violence of ages the song of a scythe.

My love, when I stand over what you were,

The flowers that I place upon your soul

Will turn a vibrant rainbow to darkness.
